Stop Unsolicited Commercial Calls (UCC) and messages (SMS)

The Indian telecom Industry is the second largest (after China) wireless market in the world with nearly 900 million subscribers. Low tariffs and direct reach to consumers has made SMS and direct calling (known as telemarketing) one of the most cost effective ways of selling products and services. This has introduced serious issues of invasion into privacy and has become a major annoyance to customers.

To control this and effectively regulate unsolicited commercial Calls and messages, TRAI has notified “The Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulations, 2010“. All the provisions of these regulations came into effect from 27th September, 2011.

The Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Portal (nccptrai.gov.in) is a data base containing a variety of information prescribed in “The Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2010”.

Now the landline and mobile phone customers who do not want to receive commercial communications can dial or SMS to 1909 (toll free) and register in either of the two categories:

Fully Blocked – this will stop all commercial Calls/SMS

Partially Blocked – this will stop all commercial Calls/SMS except SMS from one of the opted preferences

How to register?

You can register to this option using SMS

For fully blocked: write “START 0” and send it to 1909.

For partially blocked: send SMS ‘START’ with one or multiple options from the list of seven categories listed below.
